Literature Text

Endless plains of green seamed the village of Oerba which has been built centuries ago. The humans, who lived there ever since, used to be Nomads, wandering aimlessly along Grand Pulse. Generations appeared and faded, following a strict circle of existence. Dependent on the will of their gods and cruelty of nature, they began to tame creatures, cultivating the land around – and in the end, several tribes settled down in co-existence.

Their history has been long, legends and stories told by the elders, carried and offered to the younger members of the tribe. Words created magic – wavering constructs and dreams, impressions that settled down in a children's mind, bringing so much ease, joy, sadness, fear and awe. Fascinated and impressed by words, they knew that they would never forget the power of tradition.

***

A young woman dropped into the weeds, visibly out of breath. She had run many miles, stopped counting them already. Her chest heaved and fell with every breath she sucked in greedily, a smirk apparent on full and luscious lips.  Viridian colored eyes fixed an undefined point on the horizon, trailing off into an endless blue, disturbed by only a few clouds. The sunlight dazzled her and lazily, the girl lifted an arm, spreading her fingers while she moved a hand in front of her face to cover her eyes from an intense flare. Feeling sluggish, her eyes closed after a while. Her hand dropped under fatigue, resting on that flat, well-defined waist.  The soft underground had been way too alluring, inviting her into the joy of napping in the early afternoon. She was so sure that nothing, nobody could destroy that peaceful setting she found herself in. Well… nothing, except…

"GOT YA!"

A squeaking bundle attacked her out of the blue, taking the completely unaware girl by surprise. Flaming red hair, tamed in pigtails, and a pair of grassy green eyes as the only hint, the young woman gasped, feeling her own breath escaping her lungs at once. For a moment, there was silence between that odd couple; only a soft breeze rustled through the weeds, whistling in their ears. A triumphant smile grazed the doll-like face of the visibly younger girl that had straddled the woman's waist in perfect ease; but as there was no response to her outburst, delicate eyebrows knitted in worry. She looked down at her defeated counterpart, wincing at the blank face with tightly shut eyes.

"… Fang?", she asked, her voice surprisingly low and cautious.

A petite hand moved, brushing stubbornly, dark-brown hair with crimson highlights out of a face she had known and admired ever since. No reaction.

"Are you okay? Say something!"

The girl's light voice quivered in upcoming insecurity. What had she done? Did she just… hurt her counterpart? By the love of all the gods she knew! Lowering her head, the younger female patted the dark-haired woman's cheek, checking if she would show any signs of conscience. Her heart skipped a beat before she gripped the older one's shoulders, shaking her in panic.

"Faaaa~ng!"

No, this couldn't be true! She only… pounced her? Such an action couldn't kill a human, especially not a being like her! The girl's striking eyes started to glisten as she removed her hands, drawing them back to her body. What to do? What? Thousands of thoughts scurried and wrecked her mind. Why didn't she -

She couldn't even finish her train of thoughts as she squealed in shock and surprise. First, there was only a blink; Viridian green eyes snapped open, and once motionless arms reached out, grabbing the redhead's wrists. One simple twist and turn, and the younger girl got forced on her back like a helpless bug; her dark-haired companion loomed over her with an amused grin. Her posture resembled a predator, teeth visible as she laughed.

"Gotcha~"

The dominated girl stared up in shock, not realizing what just had happened. To see that terrified expression right underneath caused her to chuckle and put up a serious expression, eyebrows narrowed and lips slightly parted.

"Boo!"

The redhead squirmed uneasily at sharply formed vocals, bringing a touch of joy to the one that had held her wrists firmly.

The woman, called Fang by her friend, did her best to keep the young girl on the ground, nudging the tip of her nose.

"Ya know, Vanille… I can play da dirty tricks as well. It's gettin' old, not better."

The following huff amused her even more as she leaned in closer, puffing teasingly against a sensitive ear; the responding shudder satisfied her even more.

"That's not fair~…" the redhead complained, her green eyes growing as big as saucers. "I only tagged you, and you played dead on me!"

"Now, look who's talkin' here? Who pounced me just minutes ago… hmmm?"

Exotic, almond-shaped eyes stood in a remarkable contrast as Fang fixed her "prey", her tone softening down with each vocal. However, she didn't plan on releasing her counterpart yet, using her weight to pin the poor girl down. Vanille's body was so fragile and petite, even a gust of wind could have twisted her spine effortlessly, so it didn't really need so much strength at all.  Long and slender fingers slipped down her victim's neck to countless necklaces, playing absently with colorful beads and pearls.

"Lemme go, please! Can't… breathe…"

The redhead wiggled underneath her friend, looking like a worm that tried to escape a bird's beak. The tall-grown young woman tilted her head, lips morphed into a wide grin.

"Wanna breathe? Stop talking then, would ya?"

The pouting expression on the girl's face was much more than Fang could actually handle. Two, maybe three seconds passed by where she had tried to set up a dead-serious gaze as a countering element to the brooding face. But all efforts were tossed into the wind as she suddenly snorted, bursting out in carefree laughter as she rolled off her victim and relaxed in the grassy fields. Vanille took her chance, shifting away from the older woman to catch her breath again, sighing loudly as she did so.

"Meanie!", she squealed in protest, ripping a few weeds, she tossed  them into Fang's direction, knowing that the effect would do only little to her friend. But… still! She wanted to show her anger and displease about that behavior. The dark-haired girl only offered her a pretentious yawn, cracking her jaw as she brought herself into a sitting position. Stretching and bending her spine, Fang felt single bones and muscles pop back in place, groaning in relaxation. She wrapped her arms around her legs, pulling them closer towards her body, eyes were barely opened.

"Me? A meanie? Come on, Vanille, how could I ever be mean to you…"

The tall woman chuckled and arched her neck, tipping her head back as she inhaled deeply. After all the training she went through lately, some distraction seemed to be a welcome alternative. She dropped back into the grass and placed her arms behind her neck as support, the bracelets felt cool against tanned skin.

Vanille sat in a bit of a distance next to the wild thing and casted a glance into her counterpart's direction. With a low huff, she twisted a strand of bright red hair around her index finger, risking a short gaze every now and then. Silence between these two had been rare. Kind of… uncomforting, right? The petite girl slipped a little closer. Bit by bit. Unnoticed; well, that was what SHE thought. But Fang registered even the tiniest change and so, the dark-haired woman rolled around, facing her friend directly.

"Mhhhh? What's goin' on in that pretty little head of yours?", she started, lifting a heavy arm and pointing her finger against Vanille's forehead, nudging it lightly. The younger Oerban squirmed as she snapped out of thoughts, bringing her attention towards her companion and smiled lightly.

"Uhm… nothing, Fang."

The addressed woman smirked, looking deeply into grassy green eyes.

"Already noticed that much, Missy!"

The unpleased scowl brought a wide grin into Fang's face. Teasing her friend was way too much fun, she just couldn't help it! She took the opportunity, rolling around on her back again. The tall, Oerban huntress crossed her legs while her gaze drifted off into the skyline once more.

"Say… Vanille? When do we have to go back into the temple again? Kinda forgot…", she mumbled, ripping a single grass blade and bringing it to her lips.

"I think… in an hour. Yes. The ceremony starts in an hour!" her counterpart piped up, tilting her head in interest and examining the weed. "What are you doing?"

The Redhead crept closer again, watching her best friend in curiosity as Fang clamped the blade of grass between her thumbs, tugging it tightly between her fingers. The woman raised her head, looking at Vanille she smirked.

"Never seen that? Ya can lure animals… or humans. However ya please…"

She smirked, bringing herself into a sitting position and brought her hands closer to her lips.

"This is how it works. Jus' bring da  hands to yer lips and blow tightly!"

The huntress went on with her task, pursed her lips and blew into her folded hands. A long, shrill whistle lifted into the air and echoed in the distance. Only a few seconds later, Fang could hear a dull, baaing sound in response. Vanille's eyes widened before she giggled.

"Luring sheep? Isn't that too much of an easy target for a huntress like you?"

Viridian colored eyes narrowed slightly, before the addressed woman chuckled as well. Sheep? Well – it made sense! Shepherds knew countless different whistles to command them or the dogs that guarded the herd.

"Hm… not what I planned, but see? Works! Wanna try too?"

The eager nod of her younger companion only encouraged Fang and caused her to close the distance between. Wrapping one arm around the petite girl's slim shoulders, her facial expression softened down and she handed the grass blade to her friend, Vanille took it and casted a questioning look.

"Ok. Now, fold yer hands like this and clamp da blade between yer thumbs. Tightly. Da surface needs more tension!"

Her younger companion followed the instructions with knitted eyebrows, wondering if she was doing it correctly. She would see it anyway, right? Licking her lips, the petite girl did as she was told; putting all effort she could offer into the action, Vanille blew, her cheeks flushed and inflated like a balloon.

But instead of the whistle – pfffffrrrrt! Fang's curved eyebrows arched, first in wonder, then in amusement. Cackling loudly, she gave a hard pat on Vanille's shoulder, finding it hard to breathe and even harder to regain her composure. Her roaring laughter trailed off into the distance.

"Geez, Van! This rather sounds like a Long Gui breakin' winds!!!"

Her counterpart's striking green eyes widened before they narrowed, offering a pouting expression.

"FANG!"

The taller Oerban completely lost it as she patted Vanille's back once more, wiping away the tears from her eyes.

"Sorry Vanille – it's jus' too damn funny! I can't- "

"You're mean!"
Viridian green eyes caught sight of the petite girl's brooding face, the disappointment about her failure too present.

"Aww, come on Missy! Nobody's perfect, rite?"

As if to recall imperfection, Fang's hand trailed over the scabbed scars on her arm. Being careless had its price - and the young huntress had to make the bitter experience. She would never underestimate a young Gorgonopsid again – especially when it had nothing better to do than to call out for his pack.  Hell, how did she even get out of this? Lady Luck, obviously.

"Uhm…", she started, still looking down at her healing wounds, "sorry, Van- "

The Redhead's anger vanished as quick as it came up, like a tempest roaming over the plains of Gran Pulse.

"It's alright Fang! I know you were just joking."

Casting a wide smile, she rested her head on her friend's chest and stared off into the distance.

"You're right, nobody is perfect! Can you teach me how to whistle better?"

Fang smiled as well and ran her fingers through flaming red hair.

"Sure! Ya ready?"

The eager nod told more than a thousand words could ever do…
